| The biggest reason at the time was to hold down costs. With the advent of Hex Cores for strings, there technically isn't a reason for the silking. It used to be the primary means by which you held the outer wraps in place. The silking is soaked in a glue like material which would bind it to the string. We still use silk with our Upright Bass strings long with our other violin family products.
We basically avoided a price increase at the time by removing the silk.
