So a .045 string that is 42 lbs/inch would only have 0.00107 pounds of tension

.045/0.00107 = 42

D'Addario XL Nickel .045 has a unit weight of .00037240 per linear inch.

And my bad... going to edit... You are correct it should be just pounds...

Will they still have the colored ball ends its the one thing I can not stand. It makes me think they think I'm stupid like if nike put R and L on their shoes.

A big no to colored ball ends from me too. They look ridiculous and rudimentary. Even on a 12 string acoustic guitar set it seems borderline unnecessary .

Only in Long Scale as far as I know so far. Starting in 2013 D'Addario will be offering all of their available strings as singles including Short, Medium, and Super Long strings! So essentially if you have a .105 medium scale string, you can then use Long Scale singles to complete your set. Once the singles are available I will look into putting together balanced sets for other scales.

I am not sure about the Colored ball ends as they are in totally new packaging. The sets I have played are prototypes so I can not use those as an example. I expect to receive these before the end of the week so will crack open a set and see!

D'Addario colors the ball ends in their factory. One machine winds one gauge of string. The group of singles are then combined into sets.

The colored ball-ends are a bit of a necessity when it comes to identifying gauge and limiting the amount of packaging materials. Granted, it's much easier on Bass than guitar but it allowed us to keep an incredible amount of waste out of the recycling stream.

1++ to the efforts of D'Addario on recycling!

I like the colored ball ends . Helps in my identifying - especially since I've been experimenting with lighter gauge and stringing up higher tuned basses. There's a local shop in town that has a bin of singles and they don't have the colored ball ends, and some of those strings get lost in my string drawer even though I try to be organized.

Several years ago when you could get D'Addario rounds in singles, I made a few sets of balanced tension strings.

It makes a difference--that D string no longer sticks out so much, and the overall feel is smoother.

FWIW - You can get all of the "Long Scale" D'Addario rounds as singles at this time (except for one gauge). These Balanced sets are more fine tuned than you can get using the current singles available.

being around 40 inches long weigh around 1680 lbs each ? Does that make the whole set that or 4 times that = 6720 lbs ? Shipping must be pretty expensive and you'd need a crane to get them on your bass .
