| | Registered User | | | | Hey guys, here is a quick unboxing video of the new EXL170BT strings (yes, I'm that much of a string nerd ). I got these over the weekend from basstringsonline. So far I love them. I had been using the XL170s but always felt like I could use a bit more heft on the E string. The 107 E feels great. I think these will be the new benchmark for roundwounds for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMbUuTxrFUs
This was my first bassstringsonline order. I must say, I was hesitant before only because I have Amazon Prime with free 2nd day shipping, but these came here very quickly and the customer service has been great.

I got a set of singles to be a 33 lb set, but I think I would like the next tension up of the EXL170BT. With the 107 E, did it fit good in the nut slot? Most of my e string slots are 105, and if I were to jump up on my 5 string the 145 B sounds like it would require filing. |

I strung up a 2008 MIAp bass which comes with a 110 E from the factory( tapered )

I got relatively big and strong hands/fingers. Might add that my current string are in the scale as the 170 when i measure the E-string.
I will just use it at home and do some easy solos/intros etc and learn the scale etc.

I'm an XL user, but there is something special about these sets. Just great sounding and playing; and they do feel very balanced. Even as you slide up the neck, the tone remains consistent from string to string. Plenty of clarity and punch. I have just a few D'addario strings left to try, but these are my new go-to string. Love the new packaging as well.

Very good strings for me. | They should sound like XLs because they are XLs. The new sets have different combinations of gauges and a new gauge here and there, but the strings themselves are still XLs.

I generally do not send out many emails so don't worry about getting spam... Maybe one or two emails a month. |

But it seems like D'Addario only makes 5 sizes of tapewound...unless I'm missing something. I love the things, but all the joy BT is getting makes me interested in the possibility of an E that matches everything else...if they made one.
Tapewounds don't even get mentioned in the "online string tensions guide" but I assume that winding a 135 up to E would be way too much. I know the gauges are different due to the wrap, but it seems that typical increment (looking at naked strings) to add 4 lbs at E' 34" would be about a 107 or 110 (tape) rather than a 105 (tape)...

| | | | In regards to the balanced tension D'Addario's, how does the overall tension feel?
Let me try to explain what I'm after. The thing I like about D'Addario's (the XL's) is how long they last. I've tried the 45-65-85-105 set but found them to be a tad too stiff for my liking, especially with the D and G strings. I then tried XL's that are 40-60-80-100 and found them to be a bit too loose for my liking.
Right now I've got a set of DR Sunbeams on my bass (round core as opposed to hex core...45-65-85-105) and while the tension is perfect for me....I can't believe how fast they died out on me and I barely played them!!
So if the balanced tension D'Addario's have a tension that's comparable to the Sunbeams I might be interested in trying them out. |

The other two balanced sets are quite a bit lighter and quite a bit heavier.

| | Registered User Endorsing: Ampeg | | Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Apopka, FL | | Just got my set of Balanced Tension XL's (thanks Jason!) and strung them up on my P Lyte for tonight's gig. Had to add a little relief to the neck and reset intonation on all 4 strings, even the ones that were the same gauge as the old set of XL's, which were 40-60-75-95. The BT set's 40-55-70-95. No big whoop. Surprised I didn't want to reset string height, but the old height's working for me ATM.
Initial impressions are pretty positive, though I can see that it's going to take a little getting used to it. The D string no longer feels out of balance but is thinner and less tense, which makes me want to overshoot it. But I imagine I'll get used to that soon enough. Definitely more balanced and uniform in tensions.
And yes, they still sound like XL's, you silly folks!
