| I would say that Chromes are the way to go for first-time flatwound users. Chromes still have a lot of highs and you may be initially surprised at how bright they are. However, once that initial brightness wears off, they retain enough high end to give you some clarity where a lot of flats can sound really dead and muddy once they are broken in.
Generally, if you find Chromes too mellow, then you will know that flats aren't for you as they only get mellower from there. You may find them perfect, just old-school enough. Or, you may find that you want to go even smoother sounding flats like the Rotos or La Bella flats.
