I'm putting new flats on my bass and this is the first time I have used flats so I was just looking for advice on whether to go with D'Addario chrome flats or RotoSound black nylon flats, any help is much appreciated thank you

I'd go for d'Addario chromes. I've tried several brands, but keep coming back to the chromes. They serve me very well and kind of give me wings!

I would say that Chromes are the way to go for first-time flatwound users. Chromes still have a lot of highs and you may be initially surprised at how bright they are. However, once that initial brightness wears off, they retain enough high end to give you some clarity where a lot of flats can sound really dead and muddy once they are broken in.

Generally, if you find Chromes too mellow, then you will know that flats aren't for you as they only get mellower from there. You may find them perfect, just old-school enough. Or, you may find that you want to go even smoother sounding flats like the Rotos or La Bella flats.

I have used both, like both, prefer RS77.77s are quite unique, and do have a beautiful sound.

The Rotosound black nylons (RS88) aren't flats but a roundwound string in a flat nylon wrapping. To my ears they are sort of a hybrid between flats and rounds.
