D'Addario Tape wounds on a Breedlove acoustic

On recommendation of others, obtained a set of D'Addario nylon tape wounds for my Breedlove acoustic bass, but the wrap at the end is too large to go into the bridge, and I wonder if I should drill out the bridge (Icertainly can do this properly), but wonder if it is advisable. I hate to modify the bass to fit the strings, but I doubt I can remove the wrap and still have the tape wounds...
Any other recommendations? I need to do someting as the tone is not good, but the bass appears to have it's original strings.

Is it getting stuck at the silk? If so you can probably just remove it near the ball end.
