Years ago, D'Addario made a string called the XL-Reds...
Does anyone know if these still exist or if they have gone forever?

Weren't those just a colored version of the regular XL's?

No, they no longer exist.

They were the Red Copper version of the XL160's or 170's

I remember the XL Reds. I thought they sounded great...

...when they were new. But... ...that new sound only lasted a few hours, then they really went down-hill from there.

Their short life-span probably made them obsolete, and they're probably gone forever...

The Reds were wound with copper, which was supposed to generate a lot of info for the pup. I tried a set, and believe it or not, the E snapped on me while stringing up. Had to buy another pack just to get the big one. They sounded pretty good, but didn't last. Kind of rough-feeling as I recall, and they accumulated finger dirt uncommonly well.

I used them quite alot back in the early to mid 80's. I loved the way they felt and sounded. I have a habit of washing my hands quite a bit, so I do not recall them getting junky after a couple of ours. I currently change my strings after 2 gigs, which would be cool for the red's in either case.
