Dark but Focused Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Guys,
I need to find strings that are dark but are also foused.
I play a fretless MIM Jazz with Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pups installed in it. The strings I have right now are D'Addirio nickel flats and they are way to bright on the D and G string. I want a dark tone, but something with a focused fundimental and as little overtone as possible.
I use alot of effects that have to do pitch tracking so I need a solid fundimental without of extra sound so the effects can track quickly and cleanly.
I want flatwounds....
Any Ideas?

Have you tried Rotosound "Tru-bass"?

La Bella flats. Pick your gauge.

I love TI Jazz Flats for dub and electronica flavored stuff (as does John Davis apparently) but as flats go I wouldn't consider them "dark" as they are somewhat bright in the hi-mids. They do work well with effects for tracking and tone purposes though, at least IMO.

I'd second LaBellas or even DR Hi-Beam flats if you want to go with flats and want as much fundamental as possible.

I've never tried them, but if you were willing to go rounds, the DR Hellborg set is supposedly designed with the single wrap to give as much fundamental as possible. Just a thought.

DR flats are wonderful strings. They are silky smooth, and very flexible. They have a great feel to them, and just a deep strong fundamental tone. The E string is a little too dead for slapping, and they have a very soft tone compared to D'Addario chromes. One of my favorite flatwound strings for a big, soft, dark tone.

Two of my favorite strings (especially Compressors), but both of them would still have more brightness and overtones than the D'Addario lats the OP has now, and neither of them are flatwounds like he wants.

I don't know why but I don't really like the idea of tapewounds....

The Dr High-Beam flats are looking the most promising right now. How do these compare to Fender flats?

Well, the DRs only come in one tension so it's hard to compare but for roughly equivalent gauges the DRs are significantly lower in tension.

The DRs are thuddy right out of the box but not in an unpleasant way. Subdued highs and plenty of fundamental. They are probably my favorite flats in terms of feel - very smooth and easy to bend while not being at all floppy.

Good strings.

Fender flats are much higher tension, and have a bit more grip to the texture of the surface of the strings. They have a dark tone also, but more cloudy than the DRs.

You said you want dark. The La Bella flats are darker than the DR Flats, across the board. Both fine strings, but the La Bellas are darker.
