Dark, Growly, high tension strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I think in the 2 years i've been playing bass i've only changed strings 2 times. Its probably because my bass line-up changes so often but regardless i'm pretty unfamiliar with string brands and stuff so could anyone point me in the direction of some strings that would fit the description i have in the title? The only thing is they have to be a 6 string set.

and incase you were wondering my definition of growl would be Victor Wootens tone (when he plays fingerstyle) and by high tension i mean strings that take serious effort to bend. I got so used to bending when i started out and now i prefer to feel some resistance when i do it; don't like my strings floppin' all over the place. So, yeah any suggestions are welcome. For what it's worth my bass is fretted...

I have a set of Dean Markley Nickelwounds that are dark, growly and high tension. When I first put them on they were very bright and zingy, and stayed that way for a few weeks. But now they have broken in nicely and they sound awesome.

Also, I've found broken in D'Addario XL's can get pretty growly.

lol, the previous owner of my bass says that the strings on it now are month old D'addario XLs and he gigs a fair amount. I figure if their not broken in now then i might want to get to work on some new strings.

The original dark/growly stings: Rotosound. They aren't as bright as DR, nor do they last as long... but they sound great for rock & roll...

elites, i alway bang on about these but they are very good not too zingy at first (which i love) and broken in sound amazing. failing that go flatwounds.

I get that with D'addario Medium Halfrounds, Tight, High Tension, darker than rounds, and lots of growl, esp. when I dial in just a bit mor treble on the amp.

Question- what is the tonal/feel difference between the Lowriders and the Hi Beams?

Rotosound or Warwick Black Label.

Either one will chew off your fingers though.

Location: conditional upon harmonic Hz
Los are tighter, give you more feel for harmonics, etc, and a bit less fret noise.
