Anyone know what strings David Labruyere uses? Don't see any endorsements on his myspace or web page.

Now that guy has a serious P bass sound!

Just chimin´in to show some Labruyere love! Brutal player, his sense of groove and melody is outstanding...anyway i don´t know what strings he uses, but they sound great in his hands.

end of fanboy rant/

Guy got the axe from the John Mayer's camp a while back. It's a shame because I always really loved his playing. IMHO he's better than the current guy John uses for tours, Sean Hurley.

But I guess it could be argued that Pino is really the ultimate for Mayer. Pino's playing on Battle Studies is amazing.

Yea, well there is only one Pino, but those guy's are no slouches either. Getting Pino and Steve was a good move for John Mayer when he got into his blues thing. It added some extra credibility to his project. I don't think he would have had the same impact with some other musicians backing him up, but David Labruyere I think was a great match for John overall.

Ok, I found the article. Bassplayer April 2004 with Benny Kenny on the cover. I have the mag but no scanner so I'll just write what it says about strings.

Quote from article:
Dela's string philosophy? "Different basses like different strings, but they've got to be old." While he equipped one of his Fenders with nylon tapewounds (because "it sounded more natural that way"), he put Rotosound roundwounds on a Fender Jass Bass right after receiving it 1995 and hasn't changed them since.
Regarding onboard tone sculpting, LeBruyere likes basses that sound best with all controls turned up full. "If a bass doesn't work that way, it might be good for the studio--but simplicity is best when it comes to getting a good live tone."

Recording: his mainstay is a '62 Jazz Bass. "The sound is really round," he explains, "and there is a really smooth midrange presence." For touring he has a Closet Classic replica of his '62 Jazz. For several months though, he's also been touring with a 1965 Precision bass. "The P-Bass is kind of rude," he muses, admiring "the clanky way it pokes through [the mix]."

I hope this helps. remember....this is from 2004. Some things he may have changed a bit since then....or not at all lol.

His tone on the Where the Light Is CD/DVD by John Mayer is awesome. I'm pretty sure the tone on the CD/DVD is largely from his Avalon U5 DI, but on the intro of "I don't trust myself," there is some definite grind/OD.

Could be his sansamp. Could be the fact that Pino is playing at the same time too.

This is what the said in a mixonline article:

"I use a pair of Avalon DI's – one is a straight DI, one with a Sansamp."

Oh i just linked that one cause it's my fav. off of that CD/DVD. You can hear his tone the best in the intro when it's just Mayer and Dela on bass. For a few seconds, the bass is all by itself and you can hear the slight OD/warmness that's really sweet. I feel i get pretty close with my transparent rig + VT bass pedal, just wondering about strings.

I remember reading an article where he said that he used some sort of tube pedal, but I can't remember which it is (not a Sansamp nor the Avalon)...anyone remember?
