Sign in to disble this ad
Are there any issues with buying the DR Strings Drop Down Tuning
G D A E
Extra Heavy DDT-65 65 85 102 125

strings and stringing them B E A D on a 4 string bass?

I rather do this then buy a 5 string bass.

Thoughts?

You will have to file the nut.

You will need a much heavier set for G tuning vs B.

For G, a 35" or longer scale is much, much better. Most 4 bangers are 34", the Peavey Cirrus is 35, Spectors can be ordered in 35, there may be others.

It should work. that's what these strings are made for.

I bought a set for my 5 and 4 just to test out, and I really dislike the tone and feel, but they do what they're intended to do well, I gotta say- keep pitch at low tunings.

I have the .115 set on my NS2 just b/c I didn't have anything else right off hand and I had to get some tracking down.
I have a set for my 5 from Circle K ready to be installed as soon as we start playing out and done recording and will have a set for my 4 coming soon. We play in drop C.

Make sure your bass is a 35" scale , or if it is a 34" scale it is string thru body , and not a top mount. Otherwise the core will break as soon as you try and tune. These are very long strings. I tried tried them on a top mounted bridge ,Fender Jazz 34" scale and there is no way they wouldnt break the core of the string. Dr sent me 2 sets after I complained about the first B string coming apart. The next 2 did the same . Crimping the tuning end didnt help at all. It is a length issue. Very disappointing. Circle K Strings are designed much better.

Yeah I mentioned that in the 5 string thread regarding these. I put a 5 string set (or tried) on my NS5 which is a '96 so it's 34", and the B string broke during tuning at the tuning peg. Luckily the B I had removed was still good.
