de-tuned half-step tension like TI flats?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have grown to really like the tone of my TI flats in standard tuning. However I play detuned a half-step in my main band and the TIs are just too floppy then. So what would be a string that would be similar to TIs when tuned down? Honestly I could do with a bit more tension and thump than the TIs offer at standard tuning but the TIs really sound nice... So I'm looking for a string that would sound similar to the TIs but with higher tension. Recommendations?

Sounds like you want Chromes.

From reading reviews on TB I was under the impression that Chromes are brighter, less smooth and maybe "clackier" than TIs. But I've never tried them myself so I'll consider them. Any others?

My Roto Flats(heavy gauge) have a lot more tension than my Chromes-med. gauge (Which are not my fav. due to the obvious bright/clacky nature of them), but it could just be a thickness thing...

The Chromes set 40-95, tuned down half a step, are almost exactly the same tension as the TIs, to my fingers, at least. I just tried it on my P and my Stingray.

The problem is sound. If you like the TI sound, nothing else is like it. If you want more thump and similar tension, I might recommend the light Fender set 40-95 tuned down. Let them break in a while.

Thanks guys. I may have to try that Fender set. Pretty light gauges though. But I guess that's what it takes to get the flexibiilty of the TIs
