Question DEAB.....

Sign in to disble this ad
I was messing around with cello tuning the other day (CDGA) , realized that I quite like around tuning in 5ths , and would like the explore it more . However I kinda realize that I'm not much of a fan of the low end spectrum , as I really dont enjoy the boomy , sludgy sound it gives in a live , and plus I kinda like leaving that space for the bass drum . I like more of a honky tone you get when touching something above C2 .

In any case , I was wondering whether it would be more usefull to try DAEB . Weirdest tuning ever , but I guess it'd have more of a range coverage near that of a bass , but with a higher upper end somewhat similar to a 5 string with a high C . What are you opinions on this....

A tuning is only weird if .. well, it's never weird IMO ... whatever works for what you have to do ... you may need to check your string guages if this will be a constant ... I think that I read an article a while back that a bass player started out on a cello, and so tuning in 5ths made more sence to him anyways ... Good luck, and play on!

Okay, so this thread actually had me up last night thinking ... What Gauge strings would be best for tuning in 5ths like this ... I mean, let's say your standard set is E-100, A-80, D-60, G-40 ... then what should be your new Guage? ... I know that you can order strings individually, so getting a set would not be an issue?
What is the difference between a 105 E string and a 95 E string ... which one has more tension?
