Dead Bass String

Sign in to disble this ad
I put a new set of ernie ball strings on my 5 string Jazz and I have a dead (dull) E string. When you slap or pick, it has no bright tone, just a very dull tone. I figured it was just a dead string, So I got a 2nd set. but still no good. I can only assume that its a problem with my bass? The Nut and bridge seem fine and the string appears properly seated. I checked the intonation of the string but that also seems fine. I am out of ideas!

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? What worked for you?

Might just be a bad batch they put out. Try contacting their customer service and they might send you a new string, or maybe even a new set.

Besides that I haven't had much luck with ernie ball strings in the past. They always seem to die quickly for me. Usually only keeping that new tone for a couple days or a week at the most. Might just be my skin oil though.

You might try buying a single E string from another brand, D'addario, GHS, etc. If you still have the same issue, it's your bass. If you don't, maybe your bass just doesn't like EB strings.

Did the string you took off in the first place sound better?

+1 Process of elimination. If another brand still sounds dead it's got to be your bass and if not you have your answer.

I use EB's on one of my Tele's and they don't last all that long. Maybe their Bass Strings just aren't the best???

You might check with Jason @ bassstringsonline.com for some help. They do sell individual strings and custom gauge sets.

Good point, I changed the string with a new D'addario from my other jazz but the same, so it seems to be the bass?
