Dead Chrome?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a set of chromes on my P bass that are about 8 months old. I played a gig last night and the D string was dead. I didnt really notice it of course till into our setlist and when playing down to it it wasnt to be heard at all hardly.

The setup is the same and i thought the string was a bit weak when i had the bass to a practice last week but didnt pay attention to it. I had a backup P with chromes and switched about 5 songs into the first set...thank goodness i bring a spare bass.

I would never suspect a chrome to go bad...they are flats. The string has very low output vs the others.Has anyone had a chrome or flat do this? Can you buy single chromes or do i need to buy a whole set and restring?

i just put two sets of chromes on my AM deluxe P,
1st set had a dead D, took the set back to GC, they hassled me but gave me a new set...
2nd set had a dead A, I e-mailed Daddario, they sent me a new set (great CS)...

FYI, I didn't twist the strings when I installed them, i'm very careful about that.

the third set I took back to GC and got my $37.00 back...
I think i'll stick with my trusty LaBella 760FL's

cheers

I just replaced a set of chromes on my fretless because they all went dead. They were...yep...8 months old (it was a problem for a few weeks before I finally changed them). I didn't lose volume so much as all high mids and highs. You'd think "but they're flats...so what"...but it made it so that I had to dig in REALLY hard fingerstyle to get them to be audible in the band.

I thought I was having amp EQ problems...then I hemmed and hawed about whether or not I had pickup issues. Nope - just the strings. Slapped a new set of Chromes and I could not be happier.

The set I have on my fretted...went on in January of '07, came off in May of '07 and went back on about 3 weeks ago. No problems so far.

Thanks for the help guys.I got the bass out and took a good look at it. I discovered right away and to my surprise that the D string had come out from under the string tree or (disk) on my P's headstock.Im sure this was alot of the issue with no downward wrap or angle on the string. I fixed that and tuned it up. The string was buzzing slightly so i raised it a hair and it is ok now. I cant for the life of me understand how i didnt see the string off the disk on the headstock....oh well.
