Dead/dull E String [chromes]

Hi Tb'ers

I have a Problem with my E string. It just lacks mids or growl and has strange intonation. When I fret anything on it, the pitch falls off a few cents right after plucking. Sort of like "iaeooouuuuuu". It also sounds very diffrent from the A string or the other strings.

Here's a recording: http://soundcloud.com/makke77/estringtest/s-v0oHY

I think it has been like this since I got the strings about a year ago, but I thought the diffrences would mellow out over time - the E string had a lot less of that "new chromes zing" from the beginning. The zing did mellow out, but not the weak sound of the E.
Now that I have a proper amp at last, I am certain that the string might have been dead or faulty all along.

One thing that worries me though is that I do seem to remember a bit of a weird e-string sound when I got the bass new with it's factory strings on. I hope it's not a dead spot of some sort? The unfretted e-string is having the same issues though, generally, the symptoms only get better from B upwards. Can it be the bass? I hope not! Unfortunately, I don't have any old string to try out. So how does this sound to you?

Besides, I did try out adjusting the pickup diffrently, but to no avail.

I am thinking of getting a set of labella flats, but I am reluctant to pay that sort of $ before I know it's the string.
