dead nickel or steels=any difference?

Just a thought I had. We can tell the difference between the strings when they are new-er and really old by the sound. Well my question is:

Do nickel strings sound different dead than dead steels? And if so, do you have a preference? I have sweaty hands so I've given up on having bright strings for more than a day or so.

And what about roundwounds/groundwounds...ect
What are your thoughts?

A HUGE difference to me...

Steels lose their shimmer but keep a pretty 'round' sound for quite a while. If you are merciless on your strings you can beat a sound out of not-so-new steels.

IME when nickels go they're gone. It's a cliff thing to me - not all that gradual.

totally different sound. dead steels will still always sound more like nickels than fresh nickels

on a random note, i love my nickels, but i'd rather play dead steels than dead nickels. Knuckle_head is right when he says nickels simply 'go'. I've got a bass with nickels that are so gone i can hardly stand to play it..

Different strokes for different folks, I absolutely love the sound of worn-in nickels.

I like the stainless darker thud but errr.. and nickels tend to be warm and go mellow when dead..
