dead rounds with foam mute = cool

I had a little piece of foam laying around that I use to use as a mute when I was using flats, so I decided to try it with the Ghs boomers that I am currently using. Very interesting tone. Very dead and plunky sounding very similar to Paul McCartneys tone when using roto tape-wounds, I actually played along with a couple of tunes off Abbey Road and it
is very close when I use a pick. With fingers it sounds alot like flats with foam with a little more bite. If you havent tried it check it out its pretty cool.

when I play some Jamerson Motown stuff I sometimes throw a piece of foam rubber under the strings. not my particular sound but I do it for sh*** and giggles. I only string my basses with steel roundwounds

It really sounds cool with a set of flats. Disposable diapers make cool mutes as well.

This has been my sound for several years now. Love it.

I'd have to agree with the OP... when I tried the sponge with my old dead-ish XL170's it was very Sgt. Pepper-like. (It's a Rick-ish sounding bass anyway.) The only flats I have any experience with are TI JF's on a mahogany Ibanez P/J so it's a completely different trip, but at any rate I haven't felt the need to mute them.
