Dead TI string?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just received a set of TI jazz flats from The Perfect Bass today. I put them on my Ric immediately. I think the D string is dead. I know flats don't have much treble, but the D string has none. As I play, when I hit the D string, it sounds like a completely different bass.....not bad per se, just very different. Having had no experience with this type of thing, does this one sound (okay, you can't hear it but you get what I mean) like it is "dead" to you?

And along this lines, my first experience with TI strings has been somewhat less than positive. I've never experienced this before. Is this common with TI? Shouldn't there be some sort of QC procedure to keep this from happening?

I switched to these strings due to the low tension. I've read quite a bit about the necks on Ric 4001's being somewhat unstable and worried about the Chromes that I had on there. However, now that I listen to them on the bass (the ones that work, that is) I miss that slight treble bite that make a Rickenbacker a Rickenbacker. Am I crazy?

I really, really like TI Jazz Flats and my first experience with them was
great. They have a nice, mellow sound that I was looking for.

However, at one point, I replaced my G string with another TI JF and
hated it. It had too much zing; that's what I was trying to get rid of
(this kinda sounds the opposite of what happened to you). I don't think
this was a case where the string just needed to be broken in. My first
TI JF didn't exhibit this. I ended up putting the old TI JF string back on.

So, based on what you're saying and what I'm saying, is there a
consistency problem with TI Jazz Flats? I don't know. Maybe.
It's hard to say.
