I don't want to downtune that much (if at all really) but I want deep bass. Is there a special string gauge that can help with the deeper bass I am looking for?

A good EQ system can do just as much as heavier guage strings, if not more. Victor Wooten uses light strings with very low action and his tone can be just massive if he wants. I use heavier guage strings (DR Hi-Beams 50-110) for the feel, tension, and thicker tone.

IME, heavier strings are punchier, but not deeper. For really extended lows, I'd recommend light-gauge stainless strings. EMG pickups would help too as they have extended response in both directions.

LaBella black tape flats. Big bottom, honky mids, rubbery highs.
