defective D string on chromes

Just got a set of chromes for a new bass. The D string has a huge hump in it and it makes it sound like a phaser pedal.

Any other experiences?

Of course! Good company. I have never had a problem with Chromes myself, and I have bought a lot of sets of them.

I just bought set of Chromes for the first time. The D sounds really middy and has way more sustain than the other strings, almost like a fretless sitar. The other 3 sound deader and more uniform, which is what I wanted. Is this normal? I looked at the package and noticed that the D string has around 10 extra pounds of tension compared to the other 3. Is this the cause? If I replace the D will it sound the same?

That additional 10 lbs is common. The D and G strings on most string sets have significantly higher tension than the E and A. It could be the cause, but I don't think D'Addario sells single strings other than the low B/high C for you to verify.

Are any of your other strings twisted? They should all have a reasonable amount of sustain.
