Denatured Alcohol Test Results! Save some money!

Hey everyone, i recently viewed a post talking about using Denatured Alcohol to clean your bass strings. I was blown away at the thought that you can clean your bass strings and not have to keep buying new ones(do i live in a cave?), though i was a bit skeptical.

So i waltzed on into Home Depot (you can try any home/hardeware store) and picked up some of this magic juice for only about $6.00.

Ive got an old Yamaha bass that i havent played in about two years, so it had some really dead strings on it (Blue Steels). So I took em off and put them in a bucket filled only about 1/4" with Denatured Alcohol and kept the strings in for about 24 hours. After that i took them out and wiped them off with a rag. I put the strings on my Spector Euro and they sounded like i took them right out of the pack. Brand new, all crispy sounding!

So there you have it, if you didnt know about it already. Go pick yourself up some Denatured Alcohol and save yourself some money on strings. Especially if you have many basses which can be expensive to re-string.

Ive heard they do sound new, but not for very long. Could you post in a month to let us know how long they last after that application. And if they dont last long how many times can you do this to the strings before they are fried?? Im really curious becuase strings are expensive.

I never take them off. A little on a cotton pad every now and again keeps them fresh for a long time.

I have posted this before. Some fingerboard finishes (on maple) do not like alcohol and the finish can be damaged if alcohol gets on it.
So test first on a corner if you're going the direct wipe method.

instead of doing something that is a pain in the butt, just go to caig.com and get axe wipes.

Do these work better than fast fret? I always clean my strings after every use and they seem to stay pretty bright for a long time.
