a description of a set that i played...

Sign in to disble this ad
i played a yamaha 5 string in a store today that had the strings i wanted; they seemed to be around 45 to 125, not overly bright, felt great on the fingers, low tension (which i loved), and sounded like nickel.
i should mention that it had red silk windings on both ends of the strings. no one could tell what they were- i want to buy that exact set for my lakland darryl jones fiver...

from the description alone, can anyone piece this puzzle together?
these strings met all of the criteria for me.
a friend thought they might be rotosounds, but i doubt that an entry level bass would come with a high end string as such.

Red Silk at Both ends?

Could be worn in Rotosound Swingbass 66 strings...

GHS Boomers are Nickel Plated Steel with Red Silk but only on the Tuner End
Thomastik-Infeld fit the description but only have silk on the Tuner End
Ken Smith Burners have Red Silk at the Tuner End and Blue at the Ball End

Now if they were not Round Wounds it could be something else possibly...

They very well could have been the Rotosound's... They are one of the most popular brands of string...

They make a few different 5 string sets:

SM665 - Hybrid: .040 .060 .080 .100 .125
RS665LB - Medium Light: .035 .055 .070 .090 .120
RS665LC - Medium: .040 .060 .075 .095 .125
RS665LD - Standard: .045 .065 .080 .105 .130
RS665EL - Extra Long Scale: .045 .065 .080 .105 .130

So very well could have been one of those..

It is possible that they feel different because of other people body oils on them... If they are used and hanging on the wall that is.

That is probably why they felt different, if they are feeling different from how you remember Roto's...

There have been times I let people use my basses and when I get them back I like the feel of them better, and its usually because of their funk built up on the strings! kinda gross actually...
