Flats= dead, thumpy and warm. example of player, James Jamerson

Rounds= Generally bright depending on Nickel Plated steel or Stainless steel

Nickel is warmer sounding and ages to a nice warm sound, imo they die fast.

Stainless is bright, metallic, when they die they get dull.

Ive never boiled strings but I heard it weakens the strings.

instead of boiling, try soaking the strings in denatured alcohol overnight. i put them in a horizontal pvc tube with endcaps. a tip is that you can reuse the alcohol if you filter it through a coffee filter after using it.

other people like to use other liquids - there's whole threads about this.
