Most Fender's are 34. 35" is also popular, especially with newer 5 stringers. 32" is considered "short scale", and would include Gibson EB's. Ric's are 33.75", just to be different. There are others. It's the distance from the nut to the bridge. The 12th fret is the halfway point.

The scale length is the nominal distance from the nut to the bridge. 34" is commonly considered long scale, 32" is medium scale, and 30" is short-scale. 35" and 36" are extra-long.
The other distance is the total string length. You need the string to be long enough to reach your tuning machines and have enough to go around the tuning machine a few times when you tune it up. If your bass strings through the body some company's standard long-scale strings still won't fit a 34" bass. D'Addario is one notable example- their standard 34" long-scale strings won't fit a pre EB Music Man StingRay, a 34" Lakland strung through body, nor a Hamer Cruise Bass with the 2-Tek bridge (nor the Cruise with the Gotoh if you go through-body).

You'll have to cut some off probably, but that's common on almost any set, especially for the E string. If you don't know how, do some searching on how to restring your bass before you start. That'll save you breaking any more.
