Different Gauges

I know this sounds dumb, but I am a relatively new bass guitarist, does a larger gauge size mean a more bassy sound?

It means higher output, higher tension/stiffness (relative to the exact same string gauged down, not comparable across two different strings necessarily). Bassier? I'm not sure, in some cases I would say yes but often it's just the overall output that goes up.
