Different types of strings and for what sounds you are trying to achieve????

I don't really know what all strings sounds like and I wouldn't know which ones to even start with. I have dr high beams roundwound stainless steel on my bass at the moment because the guy at music store referred them to me because I told him I was trying to get into slap playing and marcus miller used them? I said ok and agreed to have them put on. I'm not really trying to listen to a salesmen because they are there to sell first and foremost. So I was wondering what is the difference between roundwound, flatwound, stainless steel, nickel-plated and elixir, slinky strings, d'darrio, and dr. I would like to know what brands and types do what and give what type of sound? I like all kinds of music from rap, to metal, to funk, to indie, to r&b so I would like some strings that are versatile. I'm also trying to break into slap as well. I also don't get gauges of strings and they purposes. I would appreciate any info.

There's lots of good information, opinion, & discussion in the top 2 threads in this Forum. LOTS; one's an 11 page thread. FAQs are always a good starting point.

That should answer lots of your questions, but I'll happily try to answer the ones left.
