So I put some D'Addario ETB92 Tapewounds on my 62 RI Jazz last week. Wow...what a cool sound. This may be a permanent thing with my J bass.

I agree. They are pretty cool. Bright, full-frequency tone without any string noise. Really nice middle-of-the-road balance between flats and roundwound strings. I'm loving mine.

Any thought on how they're different from chromes?

Which one of the following is true?

On D'Addario's web site, Chrome is brighter than Nylon Tapewound:

D'Addario Strings : Bass Strings

bassstringonline.com shows the opposite, Nylon Tapewound is brighter than Chrome:

I'd guess the DA website its corect. Nylon wraps are going to inhibit brightness so that, out of the pack, the chromes are brighter.

Big tension difference too. Chromes are much stiffer. I'm digging my GHS tapes. Curious about DA.

I find the tape wounds brighter. They're rounds with a nylon wrap from what I recall.

I think the discrepency might have something to do with the definition of bright. If by "bright", you mean the initial attack of the note, then the tapes are brighter, or specifically, more articulate. If by brighter, you mean which one lets higher frequency harmonics ring out for the entire length of the note, then chromes are brighter.

I love how articulate the D'addario tapes are, particularly for finger style funk, where you want articulation and bottom end, too. They're not just for old Beatles cover tunes. (not that there's anything wrong with those).
