Can anyone point me to some inexpensive stainless steel strings for the afterburner I. I'm pretty sure that standard strings won't work with it being 34''-37" scale bass. And dingwall strings are just way to expensive! Does anyone know if D'addario Prosteels will work?

GHS Super Steels in Long Scale Plus will fit. I can't remember the pricing; I ordered my set in singles from juststrings.com.

Check the forum on the Dingwall site-there's an extensive thread about other string options for the super long scale.

I think DRs will fit, though I never tried them when I had my Dingwall.

What color iis the silk on Dingwall strings? I just traded for an AB I and am wondering if it has the regular strings on it. The ones on there now look yellow from the photos.

There is a bunch of threads on Dingwall guitars webforum on alternative strings.
Heres one

I believe a standard Xl string sets will fit the E-G, but you'll need a special XXL B string

Is there someone online that carries the Dingwall Voodoo strings? I have been playing an Stingray 5 with LaBella flats for the last few months. I think I would like a touch more growl, but not the full out rounds-on-a-jazz bass twang thing. Would the Dingwall strings get me there or should I be looking at something else?

I've not tried Dingwall strings on "Conventional" basses because the E and B strings will have the full thickness of the string wrapping around the post. The growliest (but not twangiest) strings for a SR5 are the MTD stainless steel strings (and I've tried most of the strings out there)

If you want to use DR strings, you have to get the HighBeams LMR5-45 set. Most stores do not carry them. A standard set of DR's that claim to fit 37.5 inch scale will not fit the AB I. All the DR's I have tried, came up being an half inch short on the B string. Only the LMR5-45 High Beams fit, the B string is a 40 inch scale string.

Fullrange - sorry, I am looking for string suggestions for the Afterburner I have coming. The Stingray reference was just to give you an idea of what I am working with now (Pre-Dingwall). The bass apparently is shipping to me with a mixed set of strings. It looks like a DW B string with something else on the other 4. It would be great if I could order a fresh set of strings to arrive when the bass does next week. I would like to try the Dingwall set, but I am not sure where to get them. It looks like I can go to Juststrings and get an extra long set of Chromes, but I don't know what other options I have.

FCM3 - it looks like most of the trials on that thread are inconclusive or negative except for the Chromes. What are you guys using?

I like nickel strings on my ABI, but the brands I've tried also come in stainless. D'Adarrio XLs in extra long scale work; I've had great luck with Smith compressors, which have stayed on my bass for a while now. The length of each are fine for a dingwall

PB+J - The compressors look interesting. What gages do you match with the .125 B string? I assume you have to order a single 38" B to go with a 4 string set?

My best luck for a .125 or .128 match for the Smith Compressors has been the lightest gauges.

I just called Ken Smith and asked them to send me a light set with a 38 inch B string. They were very friendly about it

PB+J, can you use the standard length for the other 4? Juststrings.com sells the 38" B string as a single.

I tried buying the 38s from juststrings and they weren't long enough--they should have been, but they weren't. I ordered a regular long set and an extra long B and the wrapping went past the nut, over the fingerboard.

Try calling Ken Smith--they are very friendly, they understood exactly what I was talking about and they sent me several sets for a very good price
