Disappointed with DM Blue Steel's?

I recently bought a 2 pack of .45 Dean Markley Blue Steel's at GC for only $19.99. The staff working there told me they were very bright, which suits the genre of music I play (punk). So, I restrung my bass with them, replacing my old Rotosounds. Boy, they were right, they are extremely bright! Too bright. I had to wait about 3 days for the brightness to wear off. Now, the strings sound like an even lamer version of my wore out Roto's. No wonder they were only $20! Anyone else disappointed??

I used Blue Steels years ago (Lots of years ago!) on one bass but found them very inconsistant, pack to pack, and I got tired of changing strings. I used to like them for the first month though. Plus they were inexpensive. Try DR High Beams if you like bright, piano-like tone. They last for many months. Or learn to like TI flats, they last for years and years!

Back when my '75 Hagstrom H II BN was my only bass I used Blue Steels. The Haggy is at the far end of the thumpy range; it has zero twang. The BS's gave it a somewhat modern sound - for a week or so. Then, if I wanted to keep that sound I had to put new ones on it. IIRC those things were about $50 a pack in the late 80s and I was in high school so that only happened about twice, then I was stuck with no money and some rather weak sounding roundwounds. A few years later the guys at the Bass Emporium in Austin talked me into a set of Rotosound flats. Those same strings are on it now (yes, the very same set!). Talk about dead! This thing has as much life as Tiger Woods' marraige. But, when I'm looking for that type of sound, this thing has it in spades.

I would echo the DR Hi Beams, but a cheaper version would be the Daddario nickel XL's... you can find these for $17 a pack and they are great bang for your buck.

Both are great strings but totally different. DR=Round Core, Stainless Steel. DA=Hex Core, Nickle Wound
