I recently discovered something concerning nontapered higher-gauge strings (.130+). It had occured to me earlier that nontapered strings are a bit anemic, moreso than tapered strings. I was very let down when I discovered that my newly acquired set of singles, consisting of a .135 on the low end was VERY anemic in comparison with the rest of the strings. Then I noticed that the string was stiff on the bridge-end and continued a bit diagonally forward, and not straight out towards the nut when it left the bridge. So I came to think of something - why not stretch it out? So I tuned it up about 2-3 steps and let it sit for an hour, and additionally poked down at the bridge pickup to stretch out every little bit of stiffness the string had at the bridge-end - then tried tuning down again go pitch. Lo and behold, output was now balanced!
It surprised me that I hadn't seen a post on this topic before! Thus, if you've got some dull out-the-package nontapered B-strings, try stretching them out REAL good before chucking them! |
