Question DIY Silicone Strings+spec.selection+bass double bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello ,

This is my first message to the forum and I want to present my best .

I have boat building experience with plastics and it seems to me , it is nice to try cast my silicone bass strings.

I watched youtube and saw many 11 -13 strings homemade basses and i want to do the same but with lighter , thinner and cheaper structure without using carbon cloth or epoxy or nasty chemicals .

I looked to fender silicone strings patents and it writes to use silicone spec. between
12.99 to 10 times 10 sup 2 dynes/cm sup 2
What is the meaning of this ?

What is the thickest usable silicone string thickness ?

Fender sells 6 , 5.5 , 5 , 4.5 mm thick strings for the half of the mensur of a regular bass guitar with total 10 kilograms load.

What might be the thicknesses and load per string of monofilament silicone strings for 100 cms mensur without loosing tone and playability ?

I want to make 3 sets , double bass , regular bass , 11 strings bass.

I need basically all engineering details please.

Best ,

Mustafa Umut Sarac
