DM SR2000s/Blue Steels - what's the core?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone know if these strings use the same core and if it's round or hex? I have some med-light SR's on a 35in scale bass and light blue steels on a 34in instrument. In spite of most of the SR set being slightly heavier gauge, and the 35in scale, the SRs feel more flexible (which I like). So I'm wondering if it's due to a different core or the tapers over the bridge or.... Any clues?

I think they're the same. I don't have my boxes anymore. I had the same results on my basses. I don't really like the blue steels. they're odd.

They're both hex core, but the Blue Steels have a steel core, and the SRs have a tin mandolin wire core.

Here's where that information came from. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but sometimes ya gotta read the sticky threads.

Thanks Beta. Do you think the difference in feel is due to the core or the tapered windings?

I really can't say. I have no experience with taperwound strings, and I'm not certain that a cryogenically treated steel hex core will be less flexible than a tin plated steel hex core.

If you believe Dean Markley's marketing pap, it makes sense that the SR2000s are more flexible, because "they vibrate easier" due to the taper.
