Do bends damage flat wound strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Howdy all,

When I play bass I tend to do a lot of bends and most of my basses are strung with flats. I noticed today that my P-Bass was sounding, and feeling, sort of scratchy when I was playing it. This is the only new bass I've ever owned, and it usually plays like a dream (even though I haven't touched it in a few weeks)

So, to figure out what the scratching noise was, I inspected my neck. My frets had eaten away part of the string where it meets the fret.

So is this due to my strings? (GHS Precision flats) or new frets? or the type of frets? (I think they're medium jumbo, its an 08 P-Bass)

I've never had this problem on any of my other basses, but then again, the only other bass I play is in desperate need of a fret job but I noticed that those flats were like this too (LaBella Jamerson Flats)

So is this part of the normal wear and tear of strings, or my abrasive playing style? I've played flats most of my life but...

Normal wear and tear. All strings get fret dents if you leave them on long enough. It shortens their life a little to do extreme bending but the strings don't play you, you play the strings. So bend away.

These strings are about a month old.

The ones on my Fullerton are 5 years old but the frets themselves look like valleys.

If you play a lot, it'll happen.
