Do coated strings have a break in time?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm trying some new Daddario EXP coated strings and they sound pretty good so far... first gig on them was the other night. I never liked the sound of new nickle strings, however these have that semi broken in tone which I like, but I was hoping they would dull out a touch more in the next week or so... Do coated strings have a break in time or are they going to sound this way for the next six months? thanks!

I feel like they have a break in time for feel more than sound. Coated strings always feel kind of sticky to me at first. As far as sound goes, I think after the first week they pretty much stay the same for a few months. That's been my experience anyway. A lot probably depends on your hands/playing frequency/style and all that stuff.

My Dr neons did have a small tone change after awhile for freshly broken in sound. That sound stays much longer then my fave uncoated strings (rotosound swing66). Havent kept anyone elses coated strings on long enough to see if they got a freshly broken in sound after awhile. Those didnt sound good enough to keep or showed too much sign of coating wear off too fast from pick usage.
