Do most 34" sets work on a 35" bass?

Specificly, I'm thinking of getting the D'Adderio slowound set for my Modulus Quantum 6.

I haven't got a 35" bass, but I've got Slowounds on my Precision right now, and the silks clear the nut by about 1", strung through the bridge. So you'd at least be cutting it really close, maybe too close.

Cjazz50, good question, I also have a Q6 and would like the D'Addario Slow wounds for it. The 34" strings DO NOT work, they are too short. I know Modulus sells the Slow wounds under their own name and they are 35's, but they cost $50 a set! I have not been able to find 35" D'Addario SW's as of yet. They do not have them listed on the web site, but I have not asked at my local shop yet.

Actually, I've used both the 34" and the 35" Slowounds sets on my Modulus. I prefer the 35", but the 34" works fine.

On the 34" set, the windings come right to the nut, but they do NOT go past them, so they do work fine. They've never even touched the nut any time I've used them. Feel free to try them.

However, you CAN get the extra long set, in either a full set or as single strings, but www.juststrings.com. Great site, and a great price.

I've got D'addario slowounds on the BTB, which is a 35" bass, and they fit perfectly..

How do you like them, Allodox? I've yet to try them on my BTB, but I use them on all my other basses.

They sound very nice.. the BTB has a very distinct tone as it is, but the Slowounds enhance that tone even more.. very clear sound, even on the B-string.

But make sure you get the SW2000-5SL ( Super long scale ), because the normal sets are 34" inch.. they WILL fit on a 35" tho.. but then the string's cloth will come beyond the nut ( remove 7mm of the cloth and no problem )

the tapered B-string is something cool, but you need to raise the sadle of the bridge a little more ( keep that in mind when setting the relief & action )

To me, that means they dont fit. I guess you can put em on and they may work with no problems, I dont know. But when the cloth was clearly with in the first fret and the nut, that made me look for a longer guage string. In the 1996 bass player article on strings they recomend a 37 inch string or longer for 35" basses, so that has been the rule that I have used. But it is interesting to know that you can reomove some of the cloth and make em work. Learn something new every day. I am learning new stuff about strings a lot lately.

I used 34" on my 35" TRB5FII they fit but I took them out because they sounded to twangy.

It has been my experience that trimming some of the cloth off the headstock end of a string causes no noticeable difference in tone or longevity.

I don't really see the problem here. What's so bad with a little cloth on the wrong side of the nut? I sincerely doubt that it affects the tone that much, and like someone said, if it by any chance does, just peel some off!

Well, I got the Slowounds and they do fit (just barely) but the sound is not really what I'm looking for. I play jazz and the sound is a little too bright and ringy for me. Can anyone tell me if the 34" TI Jazz Flats would work on my bass?

BTW, the problem with too short strings isn't that the cloth wraping extends over the nut. The main problem is that the B string tapers off toward the tuner. On my bass, the B string starts tapering just a few milimeters past the nut.
