Do strings get "farty" as they get old?

Sign in to disble this ad
My bass' string have not be changed for six months because I've been playing mostly treble guitar. Right now I fiddle with the tone but it seems excessivley farty. Is this because the strings are old you think or because I never really paid attention to it on the bass before?

I could answer it my simply changing or boiling the string but I'd like know if its my bass or not.

Thanks.

Well farty usually means slightly distorted, so no it wont be the strings.

I have just changed strings because the bass started to sound "hollow" and clonky.
What do you mean...farty?
A sense of distortion may be due to low batteries( just in case that is what you are refering to when saying "farty".

thats if you have an active bass, if you have passive then theres no battery worries.

do you mean 'thumpy' ? cause then it would be the strings.

Well, I attempting to run a second "dirty channel" which I guess is it. It is perhaps the cheapest most unofficial and un-realistic "dirty" channel you've ever seen, which would probably be why I can't getting it sounding like less fart dist but more metallic dist.

It's a temporary thing that I just discovered.

I expect it still sounds 10x better with bright strings that haven't turned into the flat dullards that I have now.

So, I'll get back to you later when things are how they should be. I guess when playing under the fartiest low quality dist settings ever then it will sound like farty low quality.

It's sorta hard to describe the sound in any other way than and low distorted fart.

Its there with the dirsty stuff off too, though not at noticable.

And they bass is active, and its batt is semi-old. so at this point it could be one of about 50 things.

Thanks for the help everyone.

i think i'd first assess wether its an active or passive bass first, if its active it will need a battery, if its passive then it wont.

if it has a battery, try changing the battery for a new one.

would also be a rgeat help if you posted the made and model of your bass.

It's a active dean edge 4-LH. And theres about 500 versions of Dean edges, but this is a higher quality version (I guess) with 4 knobs.

It definitely isn't amp related as I'm going through a Pre-amp straight to headphones.

I've been fiddiling with the Q setting all day long.

It could just be the bass, I just never really scrutinized this much before.

also, try using very good headphones, most headphones distort (go 'farty') from the bass signals.

If I had my actual amp I'd be able to test out if it's the headphones as well but alas I'm in a dorm.

Thanks for all the help though everyone

I got on my actual amp and everything is tight tight tight. No farting here.

I won't worry about the fart anymore...

Hmmm, never thought of old strings as a farty noise, I have thought of them as rubber band like though
