My acoustic is strung with (electric) flats - I think they are Fender. The sound is very close to an upright, but you do have to put in some more work to get a decent acoustic volume though. I don't necessarily mean "play harder", but more that you have to re-focus your picking technique.

I rarely use a pick and do more expermental finger picking (using thumb and index finger in a king of pincer style if that makes sense! kinda like classical guitar) so i could really do with all the volume i can get! are flatwound strings quieter?

Flatwounds are thumpier and warmer with less sustain. I always use electric strings on my acoustics. Only real difference that I notice from acoustic strings is that they don't turn my fingers black.

For acoustic bass I use Thomastic Jazz Flats nice low tension so easy to play and thumpy like an upright.

I think the Labella Deep Talkin Bass Strings are geared toward Acoustic Bass but they are actually Tapewound. Those are great strings. Carvin has them cheap.
