Do you use the same string gauges for all of your basses?

The thread title says it all: do you use the same gauges between basses?

I used to try to, but lately I've been experimenting around with different gauges on all of my basses, and I'm unsure of whether or not it would be beneficial to switch everything over to one brand and gauge.

As it stands:

my jazz i usually string with 100-80-60-40
my p bass i usually string with 105-85-65-45

both tuned to Eb standard. any kind of stainless will do, but i usually rock SIT Rock Brights when i'm on tour and buying in bulk.

Nope. Through experimentation ($$$'s) I've figured out what works best for me on each of my basses. Might be a .120-.040 set on a standard type instrument or .125-.045 on my Brubakers, where I can go beyond straight and dial in backbow... very handy when going for low action with the slightly heavier string. I use .030 C's on all of my sixes.

I use stainless steel and nickel srings on various basses.

Same gauges. Normally same brands. Though the brand has occassionally changed to better suit a bass. I do alternate between two fave brands. But those are done at same time for string changes.

Different brands, definitely. I typically use medium gauge, but that can vary depending on the tension/flexibility of the string. It can also vary because some manufacturers (e.g. DR) don't go with the usual gauges for light, medium, etc.

Although the poll isn’t totally skewed it’s headed in the direction I thought it would. I’m relatively new to the bass (2 years) and still haven’t settled on any brand, type, or gauge. Still trying to train those ears (and ears) for the tone I’m looking for. I liked how you characterized us though “edgy” Love it!

i've got one bass with medium fender flats on it, i think they're 45-110, the rest either get xl's or chromes 40-95.

Use heavy gauge Dunlops 50-110 on my Sterling, DR Hi-Beams on the Carvin 5 40-130, and Jamerson Flats on the fretless 45-110. It's the combo of neck and pickups that determine the 'best' string sound IMO.

I've got only a couple of four-strings right now - a fretted and a fretless. Each one wears a set of DR strings in medium light gauge (.045-.065-.080-.100), so I guess you could say it's the same brand - if by "brand" you mean "make".

But the fretted has stainless steel Lo-Riders, and the fretless has Fat Beams. So they're not the same "model"...

I like having the same gauge, type, and brand on both my basses mostly for the consistent feel. Although the tone is slightly different with each bass, the basic characteristics of the stings are present. Right now, I'm a big fan of SIT Silencers (as posted earlier).

I have 5 basses most with different brands, and 3 different gauges.

Fender light gauge flats (40-100),
Rotosound Trubass (115-55, I think),
Two with standard gauge: one Roto 6 set, and one Dr bronze.
One with Dunlop 45-100.

I have never noticed a difference between the .5 of a difference, on the Med Lights.

I use light ernie balls on my main bass in standard tuning, and regular gauge on the bass I tune to eb. All the other basses have one or the other, depending on what I was using it for the last time I used it regularly on stage.

I have all kinds of things on my basses, rounds in steel and nickle of various brands, flats of various brands, tapes, all kinds of guages and setups. I like my basses to be different from each other.
