I've been amateurish for going on 40 years, have owned 15 if not 14 basses in that time and have clawed my way to one rung above the bottom of the ladder. I use nickel roundwounds except when I use something else and I've had four beers so I'll shut up now.
Wait. Get stainless steel frets and don't worry about fret wear. Whatever you like now will change in a couple of years anyway.

And for all the people who chimed in with negative comments about the ProSteels I can only say this - I have played professionally since the 80's and have owned more than 200 brand new top of the line basses (not to mention all the amps) and I have never, ever met a nickel string that I like. So, I just cannot accept an opinion from anyone who thinks nickel strings sound good.
Different strokes man. I've played since the 70s and can't stand Prosteels. I normally use nickels.

i had prosteels on my Modulus Quantum 4 (EMGs) for a little while. rowdy sounding string with some serious bite. it was easy to shear people's faces off when using a pick.

it was a fun experiment, but i much prefer a richer sounding non D'Ad string.
