I'm surprised that you guys are talking again and again of boiling strings when ther's a more practical and efficient way to clean strings.
Put the strings in a container with the right amount of alchool, I'm meaning the pink one!!:

be sure that is 90% of alchool (sometimes you can find a 50% for domestic use) otherwise a little rust can appear, especially with cheap strings...

this is definitely the best way.
Try and let me know if you are satisfied...

Denatured alcohol is dirt cheap and lasts forever...doesn't have any water in it, as well.

I've been using this for a couple of years and it works like a charm. I'm buying far fewer sets of strings as a result!

Yeah, I hear you!

I have acid hands, I don't have a choice - I can kill a set in one night!

Is that one of those East European names? OK, nearly seriously, now- or at least on-topic:When I do boil my strings, should I take them off the bass first?

No, you can boil them with all the bass,
then take the water and put it all over your body...and you will play like Victor Wooten or whatever you choose...
It's called "the bass player elixir"

hey, don't forget it...
It's a trademark

Should I drink the alcohol before, during, or after boiling the strings, and what kind of sauce should I serve the strings with?

How do you think they make denatured alcohol in the first place, they boil it, plus an additive to prevent hobo alcoholism. Not to have someone go and take a jar of alcohol and see how hot they can get it, but I think within reason that they'd be safe. Cause you know somebody would try to do it over an open flame.
