downtunig flats

Sign in to disble this ad
hi guys,

I am currently using D'Addario Chromes, medium gauge (.050, .070, .085, .105, plus a single .032 on top)and tuning C#-F#-B-E-A. I do like the sound, although the C# could be snappier... I would, however, be into trying some other flats for this tuning in order to get a bit more tension, and am wondering if anyone has experience doing this with the tighter strings on the market, such as the La Bella Jamerson set, or anything else... in addition to raising tension, the goal would be to keep the lively tone of the chromes if possible.

Thanks

Best thing to do would be to buy D'Addario Chromes singles. Unfortunately not much else sounds like the Chromes. Your best bet with the Chromes at C# would be the .110, then go from there to build the rest of your set. I use a .120 for my C# and it's just barely enough tension for me, but unfortunately Chromes jump from .110 to .132, and they don't have anything heavier than .132, which is why I sadly had to switch back to rounds. I tune my lowest string to G# and the .132 wasn't even close to cutting it.

Figure out the tension of the .110 at C# and build your set out of Chromes singles based on that tension. I have yet to find any other flats that really sound like the Chromes and certainly haven't found any flats that have a "B" heavier than .136.... I miss flats.
