Downtuning all for tone

Sign in to disble this ad
On my jazz i noticed that whenever I drop-d tuned the E string, it not only went down in pitch (obviously) but it gained a different tonal characteristic, which I actually really liked, so i drop tuned all 4 strings to match each other in the key of D, and now my jazz almost has a Music man Stingray tone? Anyone else come across this? And is there a set of strings that can give me that "drop tuning tone" in standard E tuning?

You could try a skinnier gauge of strings (ex.: .100 to .095) to get that looser sound.

Yup, 40-100 gauge if your using 45-105 as a suggested lighter looser gauge.

However you could likely get the same sound in std tuning with current strings by slightly lowering bridge saddles to give that bit more fret rattle your experiencing or slightly tweaking trussrod for little less relief. I'd do the latter first if when tuned to regular tuning you have more then slightest hint of relief when looking down the fretboard. Otherwise the bridge saddles lowering a little bit to get there sound wise.

When you downtune your strings by a wholetone, the tension of each string drops to 79%. You discovered you prefer the tone of lower tension strings. Looking at the D'Addario tension charts, to get the same drop in tension in EADG, choose a set with the E string gauge .010 lighter:
110 to 100
105 to 95
100 to 90
