DR Black Beauty Deffective String?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a new set of DR black beauties the other day to put on my new american deluxe jazz. I decided to not string them through body and top load them.

As I was on the finishing uptuning the bass the G string wouldn't would slip from around the tuning peg.

It seemed to wind to the tuning peg ok (2 - 3 wraps around the peg) and each other string tuned properly without any problems. But when I started to hit E# - F the 1 cm hook anchoring the string would slip and eventually come off the tuning peg.

Is this a deffective set of strings cause I've never had this issue before (although it's my first time installing a set of strings on this new jazz bass)?

Hey there mate - I had an almost identical problem when I got hold of a set of DR Black Beauties, in fact (my mistake really) I tried to pu ton the Black Beauties only a few hours before a gig and the G just wasn't staying on the peg... I think the coating is actually a bit fo a disadvantage when trying to put the strings on as it as it made the strings slip off the peg. For this reason, I think they would really benefit with a silk wrap at the end! The G string also sounded absolutely horrendous after the 1 hour ordeal of putting it on, unfortunately probably the last time I ever use the Black Beauties

I put a set of them on my Lakland 55-94, and on my '73 Jazz. No problem getting the string to hold pitch and stay in tune. I use a figure "8" with the string around the tuning peg for all strings on all my basses. This works really well. I liked the sound and look of the Black Beauties, just be aware the black coating comes off after a while. Especially where you pluck/pick and where you do a lot of fretting. For that reason I don't buy them anymore.
