DR Coated: pick friendly?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

I'm wondering if anyone knows how well DR coated strings will last when using a pick.

Thanks.

Do you mean the coating or tone?

I use the DR BB's and I like the tone, still pretty good after a few months, but the coating is getting worn where I touch them the most. I play FS 95%, so where I pluck mostly on the E and A strings you can see the coating wearing off, and some on the fretboard also on the E and A.

Overall I like them just fine.

The coating will wear off very quickly in the area where the pick strikes the string. My experience is 1-2 practice sessions shows significant wear. It is interesting to see where it shows up - it can be a training device if you want to monitor how it alters tone by picking in different areas.

Looks like I'd better avoid using a pick then if I want to use these strings.

In my last band, I used a pick at least 50% of the time on DR Black Beauties. While the coating does wear off where you pick, the strings do not go dead. I've had Black beauties on for months now and they still ring clear, even with the pick wear.

yeah, they black beauties sound really good, bright and a little tinny.
but the red devils sound Waaaaay warmer, and if your bass is just a liiiitle too trebly, these work best.

also, if the coasting starts to wear, the strings are still good, it doesnt affect the tone for about three months from anywhere to seven months.

Really? The reds devils sound different to the black? I thought they were just different colours. Are you sure it was not just because it was a different set that they sounded different?

That would be cool if they are different, as I didn't like the red ones so figured I wouldn't the black and never tried them.

I'm pretty sure it's just a different color, not a different string. I've used the red and black ones (on different basses) and I haven't noticed a difference.

the different colors do not mean different strings...just the coating they put on the strings.

and I like using DR coated strings, and I use a pick. they look different and the wear marks are not that bad.

Yeagh thats what I thought , your mind can make anything to do with music sound worse or better if you have already made your mind up. Like those amp power cables people swear are better.

I have the DR BB's on my Warwick and I use picking style 100% of the time. Over the last month I've been to a few practices and played a gig with them and they're just now starting to show wear...but not significant wear.

They still sound really good too.

I plan on putting them on a Thumb myself. How do they sound on your Warwick? How bright are they? Are they really growly, or more piano crunchy?

I can't seem to find any clips of the strings with Warwicks, that's why I'm asking.

Edit: And, what is the tension like on the Extra Life strings? Are they hex-core or round-core?
