DR coated vs. Thomastik jazz rounds

Sign in to disble this ad
it's time to try some new strings on my P, but I only really have the funds to try one or the other. I have used and LOVE the TI jazz flats and so I am inclined to try the jazz rounds. However, I also recently tried and am really enjoying the DR black beauties, so I am thinking about getting a set of the clear coated (silver stars i think they're called) to try out. any opinions from people who have some experience with both of these strings?

how is the life on the TI rounds? I know their flats last forever.

I don't have any experience with the coated DR strings, but I pretty much swear by TI Jazz Rounds now. Switched from DR Hi-Beams.

The biggest difference is probably the tension. The Jazz flats have real low tension for flatwounds, but the Jazz rounds are a lighter gauge and have even lower tension. Much lower than the DR strings will have. The Jazz Rounds also have smaller windings, so they feel a bit smoother. And they have a more mellow tone to begin with, whereas the DR strings I've used have started out much brighter.

I've only played the Jazz Rounds for a couple months now, but their tone is holding up very well so far.

i too can vouch for Jazz Rounds

i play an active Musicman SUB - initally had trouble with with the aggressive nature of the bass, but the TI Jazz Rounds have really brought out the best of my bass.

they are very low tension so you gotta adjust both the truss rod and your own playing action to suit...

Thumbs up +1 on the DR coated strings

I've never used the jazz rounds although I use a set of the flats on my Ibanez (never understood what people mean by floppy; they feel as tight as a regular string to me)

I do use the DR coated strings and have done on quite a few basses now.

I've never used them on a precision but I use the red devils on my stealthed Geddy and they feel slightly higher tension than normal. They give me a really good punchy sound. One of the only strings I have used that has enabled me to get a really good sound for fingerstyle that I can quickly change, with no sound adjustments, to slap without sounding harsh.

I've also used them on my Thunderbird, Stingray, Rickenbacker and Bass Collection and I love them. I've only had the red devils and peacock blues.

I am using Pro Steels on my precision just now to try them out - I used them on an old rick copy I used to have and liked them so thought I'd give them a go on a good bass.
