DR Color Coated vs Aurora Color Coated Bass Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got my Peavey Cirrus. It is strung with Light Gauge DR Black Beauties. In order to stay consistent and that fact that I have become a fan of the color coated strings, I did a search and found DR and Aurora as 2 companies that make these type of strings. However I could not find any comparison/review threads on them.
Anyone who has tried both of these brands care to give an opinion on which brand would be their preference and best 'bang for the buck'?
thanks
jack

IIRC, when DR first came out with their coated strings they actually bought the outer wrap wire pre coated and pre colored from Aurora. However DR recently changed the coating to be more durable (the color, but not the coating, would flake off very easily). Now I don't know if they still buy from Aurora, and they both changed, or if DR does their own now. I just know the new DR ExtraLifes are better.

So DR has a coated black beauty but now call them ExtraLifes?

No, DR has a line of coated strings called ExtraLife. Part of that line is the Black Beauty, along with Peacock Pink, Electric Blue, Red Devils, Silver Stars, Forest Green, maybe a few others, and of course all the Neon colors.

I checked them both out for a blog

Auroras Party On Aurora
DRs It’s Alive! Neon Strings by DR | Guitar Video Channel Blogs

What impressed me about the Auroras is I have put them on 3 different basses now and they still have good tone and tension. I only have about a month with the DRs.

Both you will start to see the color wear off due to the string coming in contact with the frets.

Price? They are both around $30 for a 4-string set. I think the DRs are $28ish and the Auroras are $35ish. I wouldn't say either is greater by a longshot.
