Well... My DR's were starting to ehh lose there zing... so i said to myself why not try another string.... bought a set of D'addarrio EXL170's ( thanks Jeff Moote) and all i can say is wow. Compared to DR Lo-Riders they are more comfortable to play, are not as rough.. have a better tone ( imo of course), can get aggressive ( like DR's) and have great midrange... all my basses are strung with these now... anyone else switch from DR to D'Addario?

Then to finally try some DR's I put some Sunbeam nickels on my 55-02, I think the are really great. Playing the -02 more these days. Need to play the L25K to recall the feel of the DAD's again. Got some new Chromes that I cant decide which bass to put on, prolly will go on my KSD fretless 5 or 55-01 cause the other 2 sets are too new to take off yet. All of these are very good strings, try em all I say. I'll try some of the other DR's next Im sure. |

I love their nickel rounds and I love their Flats (chromes). They have a great biting tone that really works well in rock and funk. Plus, they are cheap and sometimes you can get 2 packs. |

I'm just afraid of buying another brand of string and not being happy with them and feeling stuck with them since I paid for them.

Not only that but the G string snapped after 3 weeks or less!!! I've broke a lot of strings but for so expensive strings I don't want that to happen. I've never broke d'addarios and I slap/pop the C on my six string all the time. and they are cheap!!
Maybe I've not been clear enough, D'Addario's RULE!

| | | | D'addarios all the way... I used to swear by DRs, but now I swear that something has changed. I don't know if they changed something in the manufacturing or in the materials or if it's all just in my head, but I'm never happy with DRs anymore. After I got dissatisfied with hi-beams, I tried low-riders. Still nothing. Last week I threw a set of D'addario Prosteels on my Stingray5, and suddenly all the tone I used to hear in DRs was back. D'addario's going to be getting my string money for the foreseeable future! |

| | | | Hmm... I thought it was just me. I fell in love with DR Sunbeams several years back, but then I was consistently unimpressed with their other ones (Lo-Riders, etc.). D'Addario nickel rounds became my go-to strings when the Sunbeams weren't handy at the shops and lately, they've been on my basses all the time. Have to say though, that I have no reservations on using either string. |

Have heard lots of good things about SunBeams and LoRiders on this site, but have never tried 'em.

I decided one day to drop the extra dough on some SS DR Lo-Riders and I haven't used another type of string since. They lasted longer, felt better, and growled more than any D'addario, or any other string for that matter, I'd ever used and I used them all over the course of 8-9 years.
However, different strokes and stuff. D'addarios aren't junk or anything; they make great sounding, inexpensive strings. If they are floating your boat right now, thats cool. But, I am sticking to my DRs for a long time.

sticking to DR's is what i thought i would be doing as well... but i realized that they are a little rough.. and since the D'Addarios are not rough or not as rough.... im staying with them... in the early/mid 90's all i used was D'Addario and when i was first introduced to DR i never went back... but this is my first set in YEARS maybe thats the case... Are you comparing the Lo-Riders to Stainless D'addarios or Nickels? Because its not really a fair comparison to say the DRs are rough compared to the D'addarios if you aren't comparing the same string material. Virtually ANY stainless steel string will be rougher than any nickel string, except in extreme cases. Stainless is a rougher material than nickel. Anyways, if its the same stuff, then kudos. I am not knocking you.
But if your comparing stainless to nickel, you really should try a set of nickel Lo-Riders (not as common as the stainless variety, but they're not that hard to find either) just to make it a fair fight. In any case, glad you're happy.

Now I pretty much use them and Ken Smith RMM's. Glad I lost the DR's. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
