DR Extra Life

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys...

As my Dadaddrios die away i would like to ask how do the DR Extra Lifes differ from the Hi Beams or the Sun Beams..

Im not getting them because their colored strings which is cool but not my main priority.. but i would like to experiment with other brands and types.. I have DR Hi Beams before but wonder how these are...

So does anyone have any input or any experience with these strings?

Thanks

The bright tone lasts, quite a while if you do it right. I liked them, but $40 a set weren't worth it for me. I use rotosound swing 66's now. I like those.

I tried a set (black beauties) and killed them just as fast as regular nickle roundwounds.

The DR Extra Life strings will offer you a longer playing time, I think I heard 3-4x longer than standard strings. They sound slightly broken in when you put them on, and stay that way. Essentially, the Extra Lifes are Hi-Beams with a .0003" coating. And it doesn't flake that easily, or shred like D'Addario coated strings or Elixers.

Not to glorify them or anything... but those are my personal thoughts.

I have used these strings for quite a while. There a couple things I noticed.

- They aren't quite as bright as other strings right of the box.

- Lose initial brightness as quickly as other strings but retain tone for months longer than other string I have used.

- Colour does wear off. I have heard of people complaining that the colour gets on the fingers, this has not happened to me.

- If you have poor eye sight, the red or black string might be hard to see over a dark fingerboard.

All in all there are probably the best strings I have ever used. They work for everything!

I tried a set of black beauties on my sterling back in the day. The coating looked ugly after two sets, and they were dead in 4. FWIW, I didn't see the reason to continue using them.

I'm sometimes wondering why I kill string so quickly, but i've never had a set of coated strings go bad so quick on me than the DR's. Hi-beams seem to stay brighter longer.

Also i noticed they were not as bright as hi-beams, which may have to do with the coating. YMMV!

I'm liking mine alot.

As others said the initial brightness is gone in a week, but I hate the sound of brand new rounds anyway so this is a +1.

The overall tone seems to stay a longer, on one set of extra lifes I'm at 3 months now and they still sound great - this compares to 3 weeks, which is a normal replecement time for me, with slinkies, D'addarios etc etc.
