I've been going back and forth between Hi Beams and Lo Rider steels lately on my Ric 4003. I enjoyed the better grind of the Lo Riders, but felt the bottom end was lacking. I read about the DR Fat Beams, and got a set from Bass Strings Online - Your Custom Bass String Shop...
Exactly what I was looking for. Plenty of growl and grind with full booty shaking bottom end. Shipped really fast as well!

It all started when I needed a set of strings for my killer FrankenGeddyLee Jazz loaded with a set of Fralin pickups and saw a super good deal w/free shipping on a set of Fat Beams on Musician's Friend. I thought if they were developed in conjunction w/Marcus Miller, then they were probably optimized for a 70's Jazz pickup spacing so I took the plunge. The tension and feel of them is just right for me and the tone ... they have that roundwound growl thing going in spades, but also have a lot of depth ... very full sounding. Me likey.

You'd think Marcus Miller sig strings would be bright,
But with his ash/maple axe, maybe he needs a fatter sounding string to compliment them.
But yeah..cool, glad you A/B'ed them, I also like lo rider nickles, but I'll try the Fatz after reading this.

I play Fat Beams on my Sadowsky NYC 5-24 (Maple FB)
I use Sun Beams on my Kinal SK5B and Linc Luthier Impression
I use GHS Pressurewounds on my Hamer Cruisebass Fretless
I like D'Addario Chromes on My Modulus VJ
The Fat Beams are great on all of those basses, but I prefer to use them mostly on the bass with the maple fingerboard.

I use 'em on all three of my fretless basses, and love 'em for their excellent combination of modern clarity, depth, smoothness, flexibility, ease of play, and longevity.
Sure they're a little more expensive than more run-of-the mill strings...but only by a few bucks. Compare that modest sacrifice against all that superior quality, and it's really a no-brainer.
They work well for just about any genre of music (with the possible exception of hard rock & metal). And they may be just about the best model of strings on the entire planet for fusion (i.e. Alain Caron, Gary Willis, Percy Jones, etc. etc.)

MM | Nope, they work very well for hard rock and metal.

MM | I play in a full-on Speed Metal band, and I use Fat Beams. They're excellent for my style!
Cheers! |

My last set lasted me through a 5-song rehearsal - literally no more than 40 minutes. I was shocked and have never purchased another set since. They sounded nice, but their longevity to price ratio was unacceptable for me.
