Whoever told you that DR = Fender was full of it. Fender has their own line of strings that they manage.

thought so.

anyway... i've ordered some sunbeams and have just bought a set of regular fender nickelplated strings. i'll see how they stack up (besides the difference in composition). DRs have always felt... tighter and just generally better than all the others i've tried.

I use DR's Hi-Beam strings right now. Really love the way they feel and sound. I'm into the bright/crisp thing so they get changed out about every 5-6 months.

Same here, thought I probably go through a set on my main bass about every 1-2 months.

I heard that they aren't just the same string, but they are manufactured in the same factory.
Quite different thing.

I heard that fender strings were manufactured in Mexico. Hmm.. confirm with your source, because I read that on the package of the last package of fender strings I bought.

In 2005 or so, I had a long conversation with an employee of GHS that told me GHS made DR strings, among others. It took alot of coaxing, but he did say flat out that DR were made by GHS. Now, that is not to say that they are the same, just made by the same company in the same factory. Eminence does it with speakers.

It sounds like we have a serious string conspiracy here. I was under the impression that DR strings were made somewhere in NJ.

I've also heard it said that there's only a few places that actually wind strings. I really want to say it was less than 5. D'adarrio, EB, and GHS all do their own (I believe) and there may be one or two more.

I just called DR. Hopefully they will chime in and answer some questions for us... BTW, he dismissed all these claims as bogus.

Probably not. When I was talking to Tony -icantpronouncehislastname - he couldn't share that info.

We'll have to wait and see. In short, he told me that their factory is in Emerson, NJ, and they employ about 100 people winding the strings. He mentioned he drives by the house everyday on his way to the factory where they started the business with two string winding machines in a garage.

Well I doubt it's information they would volunteer freely. FWIW, all the info I've heard is that there are very few places that actually manufacture strings, as mentioned above. Many of them probably come from under the same roof, but they probably have different specs and construction. I believe I read something to that effect in Bass Player a loooong time ago; maybe I still have that issue somewhere.

GHS says their strings are made in Battle Creek, MI.
DR says their strings are made in Emerson, NJ.
Fender is from Scottsdale, AR. and probably makes their strings in mexico, though I can't confirm this.

All info here taken directly from their websites.
